The mission of the National Association of Agricultural and Economics Administrators (NAAEA) is to improve the leadership and management of agricultural economics programs; to support the acquisition of resources to carry out agricultural economics research, teaching, and extension programs; and to address common needs and concerns of agricultural economics administrators.

Membership in the NAAEA includes individuals who administer departments or units in academia, public agencies, and foundations offering and supporting agricultural economics, resource economics, agribusiness management, and similar research, teaching, and/or extension programs.

The mission of the Council on Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics (C-FARE) is to enhance the effectiveness of the food, agricultural, resource, and related economic sectors through a stronger national presence of the agricultural and applied economics profession in the processes of identifying key economic issues; connecting the work of the profession to those in policy making and leadership, and generating greater public appreciation for research, extension/outreach, and academic programs. Every other year, the NAAEA and C-FARE hold joint fall meetings.

The biennial meeting of the NAAEA is an opportunity to:

  • Network across departments about challenges and opportunities that exist for the profession of agricultural and applied economics researchers, educators, and extension faculty.

  • Engage with leadership from public and private stakeholder organizations and government institutions that use information from research generated by the profession to inform economic and/or policy decisions.

  • Identify effective approaches for training graduates and faculty to be honest brokers of policy alternatives and/or policy options for emerging and current issues facing the public and private sector as well as communities.

This year, the NAAEA will convene along with the C-FARE board of directors on Monday, October 28th and Tuesday, October 29th.

Summary of Activities

The Agricultural and Applied Economics NAAEA Business Meeting and Congressional Visits Day (CVD) is a two-day biennial event that brings agricultural and applied economics professionals and executives to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness about the importance of agricultural and applied economics analysis, research, and related statistical resources.

Monday, October 28th will include engaging discussions with directors and national program leadership from federal funding agencies, including the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Science Foundation. The leadership of the American Farm Bureau Federation, the National Farmers Union, and the National Academies of Science have been invited to provide insight on the importance of communicating publicly funded economic research and analysis to key decision makers as well as to make suggestions for the timing of such engagements. The AAEA President, Keith Coble will update the NAAEA on the AAEA strategic plan development. Finally, participants will take part in a training to advance and refine their communication approaches with policy makers both at the state and federal levels about the value of investments in agricultural, environmental, food, and resource economics.

Tuesday, October 29th will include a series of regionally relevant congressional visits led by experienced team leaders. All participants will have a schedule created for them and four other participants that includes visits to members of Congress as well as congressional staff from their congressional delegation. Team leaders will keep conversations focused and on track as necessary according to NAAEA talking points. This is a great opportunity to build a relationship with your congressional delegation and to tell them about the work that your faculty are doing on issues pertinent to the state or district. Please email information@cfare.org to be a team leader.

A complete agenda will be posted on Friday, September 13th. Please take care to register before September 16th to get the reduced fee.

At the 2017 visits day, participants discussed the Agricultural and Applied Economics Priorities and Solutions Report with congressional members and staff.

The CVD is made possible by the National Association of Agricultural Economics Administrators (NAAEA), the Southern Agricultural Economics Association (SAEA), and the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA), as well as individual sponsors.
